Continuous Training for the Administrative Service
 |
Community Attachment Programme If you are a young Administrative Officer (AO), to increase exposure to issues on the ground, you will participate in a four-month Community Attachment Programme. The Programme helps Administrative Officers (AOs) appreciate the problems and needs of ordinary Singaporeans. This is important as AOs help formulate policies which will impact the lives of Singaporeans. Through interaction with grassroots leaders and participation in community activities, the AOs also have a better understanding of the grassroots organisations' valuable contribution in enhancing and reflecting the concerns of the residents. Each officer will be attached to a Residents' Committee (RC). As a member of the RC, officers will attend RC meetings and assist in the planning and implementation of projects at the grassroot level.
Academic training and private work attachments As an AO, you may be given a scholarship to pursue postgraduate training. You could be sent for relevant courses at renowned academic or research institutions, or work attachments at global private sector companies. You could pursue a one-year Masters in General Management, Public Administration of Public Management at a local or overseas institution. You could opt for shorter executive programmes such as the Executive Development Programme, or the Advanced Management Programme. You could also pursue sabbaticals, often by self-designing learning programmes involving attachments to appropriate research or learning organisations.
Specially designed milestone programmes If you are a senior AO, you would attend the 5-week Senior Management Programme (generally for Directors or would-be Directors). If you are ready to assume a public sector leadership position, you would attend the Leaders in Administration Programme. These programmes aim to prepare you for higher-level appointments by equipping you with an understanding of the processes and challenges in policy implementation, further honing your organisational leadership and management skills. They deepen your understanding of the political, economic and social development of the region and the world. As part of these programmes, you would be able to learn from and network with key public sector leaders of other countries during the study visits abroad.
Attending seminars, workshops, study trips and attachment opportunities You would have the opportunity to take part in local and overseas development programmes through seminars, workshops, or study trips. You could also choose to gain further understanding of how different communities are served through attachment with grassroots or international organisations and unions.
Serving as Leaders For the purpose of development and exposure, you would be given the opportunity to serve as directors on boards of government-linked companies or statutory boards.
